Dear Omega-verse:

I hate you. I hate everything about you. I hate your hand-wavy non-con. I hate your ridiculous power dynamics. I hate that you have infested seemingly every fandom. I hate that your authors don't feel the compunction to fucking WARN for rape. I hate that your authors don't seem to understand that a lot of what they're writing IS rape. (I say this with a YKINMKATOK attitude, honestly. Write what you want, enjoy writing it, but give people the chance to make an educated decision about whether or not they want to read it.) I hate that you, Omega-verse, seem to be the new accepted standard for power-exchange relationship fic, and yet, there isn't any power-exchange going on.

But I'm guessing, based on the sheer volume of fic I see, that it's probably just me.

No Love,
Me.
"They're all f'locked at present - forgive me, for I cannot be bothered to unlock them all."

Forgive me, for I cannot be arsed to read them, in that case.

Why would you advertise your fic on a public comm, and then tell people it's all friends locked, and they have to friend you for access, or ask for each story to be unlocked? Stories that you just said you couldn't be bothered to unlock? Wait, WHAT?
Dear Fandom Claus,

I've been very good this year, and though I know I'm a little late with this letter, I'd like to post my wish list.

1. Fandom Claus, it would be super delightful if writers and artists would post their stuff with easily understood header information. I don't need a lot, Ms. Claus, just these handy little bits of information would do:

Title (You'd be surprised how often people seem to forget this.)
Pairing/Gen- They may have written the story, drawn the art, or, er, vidded the vid, but GOSH, people seem pretty confused by who they are pairing up (or not!) in their fanworks. Since I don't have the hours in the day I would need to look at every single fanwork that shows up to be posted for a newsletter, I would really appreciate it if you could swing it so that this could start showing up more often.
Summary- Fandom Claus can you convince people that a summary and a teaser are two different things? Pretty please? A summary tells you what the story is about. A teaser tries to entice people to read it with a line of clever dialogue or prose that makes people wish they had some idea what the story was about.
Rating- Fandom isn't the MPAA, Ms. Claus, and people aren't going to be fined for violating some arcane ratings system based on the idea that horrific, deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don’t say any naughty words. No need to be so US-centric, either. Any indication of rating is fine with me. Just a simple "teen" or "PG". People like to know if they are about to pull up hardcore pegging fic, or someone getting turned into a kitten, and since there's that whole summary/teaser misunderstanding, ratings kind of help with that. Some things, you don't want to read at Grandma's house, y'know? (For the record, Grandma is fine with the pegging fic, but she's allergic to cats, and kitten fic isn't welcome in her home.)

2. Can you leave me the rest of my bands, Fandom Claus?

3. I don't really want a pony. But I would like people to stop and think about their words before they post something demanding at community and newsletter mods. Yup, it's part of their job to take care of stuff, and clean up links, and correct oversights. Most times they don't mind hearing about things that need fixing, and will even thank you for the nudge. But Fandom Claus, they are all volunteers, and as I'm sure you are aware, fandom gets nice things because fans put in lots of time and effort making them nice. They don't just happen that way, they are collected and cultivated, and posted in a shiny grab bag of lovely links, often requiring a lot of extra poking, because people don't believe in using headers. Mistakes happen, but generally a simple, "Hey, you seem to have missed my story. Here is is." will suffice, instead of a nasty, passive-aggressive comment about how something should have been done. Fandom is not entitled to news communities and newsletters. They are a gift of time and effort, frequently frustrating to corral and code, and it would be nice if, when people are demanding their pony, they could remember that someone has to find the pony, groom the pony, saddle the pony, and then convince it to work with the god damn dog.

That's all, Fandom Claus. I left you some fic and cookies on the mantle.

Sincerely,

Reesa

(In other news: Get off my lawn!)
I recently read an amazing story. It was a White Collar/Sherlock (BBC 2010) crossover by [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge, called Paper Chase. It's brilliant. Gen for the most part, clever beyond belief, and just FUN. I wish all stories were this story. Part of the plot involves Neal Caffrey doing some paintings for a show:

The FBI set them up with a studio wired to the teeth with surveillance, and Neal managed to bang out fifteen convincingly pretentious canvases over the course of two days, while Peter strongarmed a gallery into a fake opening for Sherlock's new alias, a visiting artist from London with a penchant for wildly surreal and expressionist landscapes.

"What do you think, Doc?" Neal asked, when the joint taskforce working on the case came in to view the studio and he found John Watson standing in front of one painting, looking perplexed.

"This is London," John answered, forehead wrinkling, eyes taking it in with confusion.

Neal crossed his arms. "How do you know?"

"I don't know." John tilted his head. "That's what's bothering me. There's not a single thing I recognise, it's just streaks and swirls and things, but it's the skyline east from somewhere near Hyde Park, isn't it?"

So, that intrigued me. And THEN I read the DVD commentary [livejournal.com profile] copperbadge posted, where he and his beta readers talked about the style he'd actually envisioned for the paintings:

...a visiting artist from London with a penchant for wildly surreal and expressionist landscapes.
Dove: Which, of course, I now want to see. Make me fifteen landscapes a la Caffrey, Sam!
Sam: I picture them as sort of Matisse and Jackson Pollock having a brutal slapfight.

That's when I knew that I had to try, even though there was no way I could possibly manage something like that. And thus, I give you my first ever fanart- Paper Chase, or, Matisse and Jackson Pollock Having a Brutal Slapfight:

Paper Chase 2

This is the most fun I have EVER had painting, and I fully intend to dishonour some more landscapes this way. It's loads of fun, and I recommend it! (And the story, which is THE BEST STORY EVER.) The moral of the story is, no matter who wins the slapfight, if you leave the painting to me, art as a whole is the loser.
The Trick Is To Make It Look Easy by [livejournal.com profile] paperclipbitch
Sherlock (BBC 2010)'
Sherlock/Watson
This story manages to capture the awkward charm and overt creepiness of Holmes, and the slightly baffled, slightly damaged, "fuck it, what else am I going to do?" attitude that Watson seems to have. But don't let that fool you- this is a working partnership, for all that it's still forming, and the ways it works, and the ways it doesn't, make for fascinating reading.

Excerpt:

John stares at the blinking cursor on the screen for a long moment. I have moved in with a guy who knows his shit, he types. And I mean, really knows his shit. He knows more shit than anyone has ever known before, possibly.
That sounds a little bit ineloquent and fifteen-year-old fanboy, he decides, and erases it.

So I’m now living in a flat with a definite sociopath and possible psychopath who I have known for approximately a week, who likes serial killers and toast. His brother kidnapped me once and people keep warning me away from him but somehow I’m now his crime scene associate and I’ve eaten exactly one meal alone since I met him.

It’s not at all gay.

John bites his lower lip and then, after a moment, he backspaces the last sentence and corrects it to: All right, so it’s incredibly gay.

John reads back through his blog entry and pictures what Sherlock will say to him about it, presumably at a very awkward and inappropriate time, possibly when there are corpses or surly police officers in the room.

He deletes all of it and just writes have found a flat.

I have never before missed the pineapple in an episode of Psych. Clearly, this calls for a rewatch! Tomorrow though.

Shawn Spencer: he will totally fuck up your windows with his mad coordination. And then he will take you to PF Chang's. Okay, so Gus will pay, but the thought is there.
OMG WHITE COLLAR ILU.

That is all.

In summary- once I eat something and stop being a flailing freak, I meet wonderful people who do not roll their eyes when I wax rhapsodic about White Collar, Psych, Leverage, and the inherent RIGHTNESS of Neal/Peter/Elizabeth.

I want to go again. I have never experienced post-con letdown ON THE WAY TO MY CAR before. Everyone I met was awesome, and thank you for letting me babble incoherently in panels, or in, some cases, behind the booth at Dreampsinner.

And in conclusion- a world full of fangirls would make for a lot more laughter.

I'll be at Con.txt this weekend, hanging out at the Dreamspinner and Torquere booths, in between panels on Psych, White Collar, Leverage, and anything else that vaguely hints at the bad guys being the good guys.

If you see me, say hello! My badge says Reesa (and Shea), my hair is ridiculously long, and I have bookmarks to hand out. (I use far fewer exclamation points in person, so there's a bonus.)
Thing #1- Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is hooooot.
Thing #2- "The Rundown" is probably one of the slashiest movies I've ever seen.
Thing #3- WHY IS THERE NO SEQUEL?
Thing #4- There is such an APPALLING lack of "Rundown" slash on the intarwebz, I cannot even deal. It's so empty that I even tried writing a story once. It didn't go anywhere.
Thing #5- This is why I was amazed to discover that there was a lovely story I hadn't read yet, by [livejournal.com profile] stillane - "Settle" (Travis/Beck, post-movie)
Oh, SHOW. You've been my not-so guilty pleasure for 5 years, and tonight you delivered an epic end. I watched it as a series finale, even though it's just a season, and I don't know how to feel, but it was fitting, and it was good, and ow, my aching heart.

Con.txt

Apr. 26th, 2010 11:04 pm
I think, no matter how much I try to tweak my finances, that Con.txt is just not going to happen for me this year. (I know, wah, get a real problem.) I just looked at the potential programming, and realized that it's a week before I go to Seattle for the Collective vacation, and it's just not going to happen.

This bums me. I think I will try to find a couple panels at Balticon to quench my fannish thirst, but for my own sake, I think I need to mentally take Con.txt off the table this year. I can't believe it's in Silver Spring, and I'm going to miss it AGAIN. Boo. Hiss.

Ah well. I hope everyone else has a really great time, and if someone wanted to spread massive amounts of Psych, White Collar OT3, and Leverage OT3 love for me, I wouldn't object!
So, in a fit of temporary insanity, I signed up to do a mix for the [livejournal.com profile] blackdress_adam challenge. This is particularly hilarious, because:

a) I have never watched a single episode of American Idol. EVER. I don't say this in a "hiding my shame" kind of way- I have seen approximately fifteen 30-second clips at the beginning of either House or Bones, and other than osmosis by pop culture, that is the sum total of my exposure to AI.
b) I do not own any music by Adam Lambert. I have listened to several songs on YouTube, but haven't even purchased a single. (I have not acquired it through other, more nefarious means, either.)
c) ... THIS IS NOT MY FANDOM, PEOPLE. Seriously!

Despite this, Adam Lambert is hot, I am shallow, and HE KEEPS SHOWING UP IN OTHER FANDOMS. It's like, "Ding Dong- Lambert calling!" and there is he, trying to sell you Skin-So-Soft and makeup that makes you break out! Or possibly I have confused him with the neighbourhood Avon lady. In any case, witness the fact that I have an AI tag in my delicious account, and then refer back to items A, B, and C.

Whatever. I'm blaming this all on Pete Wentz's beard'o'horrors, and going back to my Con Man! In Space! story.
So I'm just gonna get it off my chest.

I like Eliza Dushku. I like Joss Whedon.

I really don't like Dollhouse. I don't think they hit what they were trying for, and I find the power dynamics at best annoying, and at worst really, really disturbing. I don't enjoy it when even the "good guys" are domineering daddy's who want to save the innocent little girl, and I'm just supposed to sit there week after week and watch most of the main characters smile eerily before getting programmed to go get abused again.

I'm disappointed by it, and I went from wanting to know how it was going to be resolved in a manner that would make me feel at ALL like we hadn't just watched two seasons worth of rape fantasies, to not being comfortable watching it anymore at all.

No offense is meant to those who do enjoy it, this is just my opinion. I'm definitely not wasting more of my time on a show that makes me cringe, though.
Oh look, it's "poke fun (HAHAHAHA) at fandom" night on Supernatural!

Again!

Yay! (Cut for light spoilers.) )
