Dear Omega-verse:

I hate you. I hate everything about you. I hate your hand-wavy non-con. I hate your ridiculous power dynamics. I hate that you have infested seemingly every fandom. I hate that your authors don't feel the compunction to fucking WARN for rape. I hate that your authors don't seem to understand that a lot of what they're writing IS rape. (I say this with a YKINMKATOK attitude, honestly. Write what you want, enjoy writing it, but give people the chance to make an educated decision about whether or not they want to read it.) I hate that you, Omega-verse, seem to be the new accepted standard for power-exchange relationship fic, and yet, there isn't any power-exchange going on.

But I'm guessing, based on the sheer volume of fic I see, that it's probably just me.

No Love,

God, YES. What the HELL is this stuff?? When did it start? I wasn't reading any fanfic for, well, years, but now I am and Sherlock is infested with it. It's AWFUL and I HATE it and I have CAPLOCKS OF DOOM.

Bad verse. I'd love to find out who started this and find out if what's out there is a corruption of what had been a decent power exchange kink.

OMFG, THANK YOU. I can't believe how BAD it is. I'd like to somehow blame it on the total clusterfuck of "power exchange" that is 50 Shades, but sadly, I think it predates.

The fact that every single story I've read in the 'verse falls back on a trope I can't stand, the "rape victim falls in looooove with her/his rapist, so it's not really rape anymore, just sex before they consented" is not a point in its favour.

You are not alone! Ick. Omega verse recreates in slash what I find unbearable about so much mainstream het romance with its biologically determined roles, creepy imbalance of power, and the whole "you belong to me" thing taken to an extreme where the woman/omega really has no choice in the matter and is pretty much reduced to an object to be possessed.

That is NOT why I read slash. I say again: ick!

Oh, thank narwhals! I really was beginning to think I was the only one who found it creepy. And you really hit the nail on the head here. The predefined roles, the lack of choice- it's really, really icky, and precisely why I always thought I hated romance novels.
